FIGURES THROUGH LIGHT
TRACES OF HUMAN BODIES
In this project, I observed the human skeleton and body forms from different vantage points as the source for a spatial exploration using mark and line. Working with different directionality and intensity of lighting conditions, I drew parts of the skeleton with my own corresponding body parts, overlapping and connecting separately drawn elements to create an unexpected whole. By considering how human figures interact with light, I tried to find new hybrid forms through recombining the anatomical structure and curvature of the skeleton.
I began the process of drawing without revealing the entire composition. Using erasers, charcoals, and sandpapers, I thought about more space and more structure could be found and employed different speeds of mark making. A sense of depth between skeletal forms in space was created within this process through the establishment of a range of essential marks. Furthermore, a linear atmospheric perspective and foreshortening, cross contour line, blind contour, and mark making were used to create more depth within the drawing.
Working with the traces of light and human figures, I believe that each part of the drawing somehow relates to the whole. Such relationship was explored through overlapping, intersecting, and filling out the open space between marks and lines. I think of my drawing process as a sort of visual journey.
